How to Check Tire Pressure at Home
The optimal time to check your vehicle’s tire pressure is when they’re cold. This means they haven’t been used for three hours or more. To ensure you’re always ready to check the levels, grab a digital or standard pressure gauge at the store and keep it on hand. It’s also a good idea to purchase an air compressor so that you can fill up the tires right from home, too.
Next, you’ll want to verify what pressure numbers you’re looking for, which is measured in pounds per square inch (PSI). Check your driver’s side door jamb to locate the PSI for each tire.
Now, you’re ready to use the gauge. Take off the valve cap of the first tire, place the gauge over it, and press down to get the reading. Make note of the number and see how it compares to the optimal PSI. Go around to each tire and do the same.
If pressure is low, refill with your personal compressor or drive to a nearby gas station to use their equipment. If you must drive a decent distance, the tires will no longer be cold. In this case, add a few extra PSI to account for this and recheck the number later.
Does your car have a spare tire? It’s important to keep it filled, too. Follow the same steps to check its pressure and refill if needed.
